Baltimore Riots

A War for More ~

The streets of Baltimore strain
with the onslaught of angry
child soldiers in the war for more
than a pittance of America’s
wealth. Social justice, a pipe
dream that cannot find its way
into their nights…or days.

Rage rips through the crowd,
slicing open hardened hearts
and plate glass store fronts.
Hunger to have something
worth having gnaws within
bodies too Black and poor to have
a chance at being whole.

Staring into their anguished faces
from the safe distance
of our cell phones and TVs,
we blithely chastise their parents
who with us grieve the scenes
that indict America with the crime
of resisting change until more bullets fly.
