Seventh grade was a lesson
in global diplomacy
and human tendencies.

Our teacher, Mrs. Bernstein,
had stories to give us,
instead of rules.

Mountains and valleys
were part of every
hero’s journey.

Lord of the Flies
was a reenactment
of the Holocaust.

National capitols
were a map of men
wanting what others had.

In her version of mathematics,
sometimes things
just didn’t add up.

Righteousness
and its brother entitlement
weren’t on our vocabulary list

…and one day when there were two
angry boys and one music chair,
we all watched as they pushed

each other back and forth,
while Mrs. Bernstein assured us, Peace begins
with two bullies sitting down together!
