Mueller Testifies Before Congress

Testimony

Like an oldest child set in a corner
he didn’t choose, under the glare
of an interrogation about something
broken but over and done,

he speaks to scowling faces
who piously demand
more of the truth than he has
told them so far.

Looking exhausted
by the pointed questions
from these prideful few
who, themselves, have lied
about any number of things
in their private lives,

he answers them. Stoically,
he spells out words
already spoken, written, given
in the official vocabulary
of the facts and the law.

Hiding his disgust like a boy
whose brother broke the vase,
he knows the tables
should be turned,
and he should be the one
asking, Why?
