Questions
Everywhere, criminals disguised as politicians
play charades of leaders
but allow no one to guess the answer.
In brutal war games, they are the authority.
Deep in other countries’ pockets
of terrorized families holding onto their homes,
liars light fires whose smoke is a veil.
At night in the stench of trenches and prisons,
distraught soldiers ask God for mercy
as they cry and rub photos from home.
Armed with all the (wrong) answers,
men gone mad with revenge and stolen power
are wildly killing children—children!
So why are we all holding our questions?
Grandfathers, you are our elders!
Grandmothers, who will bring food?
Where are the men who claim courage?
Where are the women who’ve known pain.
Last question: Aren’t you one of those?
