Safe~

Like children hugging one another
while leaning into the musty story
of an old ogre who eats people—
each child conjuring its gnashing teeth
though not one of them has met
an ogre or a cannibal…
we shiver listening to the news,
hold more tightly to our dearest
beliefs and the friends who belong
to the congregations of our fears,
hoping that will keep us safe
from the mythological tyrants
whom we are told are after us—
those giants and monsters
whose ravenous hunger
for blood and bones
must surely mean
they are coming
for us (for us!)
next.
