Primary News~

It plays over and over
on every screen—
a raconteur ranting
in sound bites—
and we can’t stop watching.
Oh, how we, Americans, love
to be entertained—
cat videos, crazy inventions,
the hand-to-hand combat
of professional sports,
cops roughing up criminals,
comedians exposing us.
Even when we know
it is all for show,
we like, share, repost,
pay per view, save.
Then one day, we read
a headline that frightens
us into wanting to know
what in the world is going on,
but the only news is a spoof
of democracy, proof
it is time to stop laughing.
